A quote by Teddy Roosevelt

Dear class,
I would like you to read the quote below by Theodore Roosevelt and comment on what it means to you.
"It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat."

  1. It means that the person who has done the work is more important then the person who came up with the idea.The worker uses his strength and sweat to get the job done.

  2. I would replace "done the work" in the above comment with "tried" and "came up with the idea" with "didn't try." Otherwise we are excluding all of the work that went into coming up with the idea!

  6. The quote means that the honor and praise should not go to the critics and the judges, but to the people who atleast went out there and tried. Despite the fact that they failed or not, they atleast tried.

  7. It means if you work hard you get places and become a successful person, and if your lazy and don't work hard for much then you wont get many places and go very far with you life.

  8. The quote means that the harder you work, the farther you will get in life. People like Steve Jobs, President Obama, and even athletes have worked to get where the are now.

  9. I think the qoute is saying always put your best forward, no mattet what the obstacle is, you should always try to overcome. Also I think it's saying that youshouldn't worry about what other people may think or say about you when your trying to overcome an obstacle because no matter what they say they can't stop you from reaching your goal(unless your goal is to get people to stop talking about you).

  11. To me this quote means that the harder you work the more successful you will be in life and you will amount to something. If you are lazy and dont do the work in life you really wont amount to much

  12. To me it means that the harder you work for something, the more you strive to get to your goal, even though life will throw rocks at you if you keep going, in the end the reward will be far greater than if you stoped when it started to get dificult.

    The phrase that Teddy Roosevelt made means that critics and people that tell u things, criticize on what u mess up on, don't matter. The people that do matter are the people that do the work, the person that even when they mess up, they get back on their feet and keep on going no matter what other people say or do to make them go down. That is what the qoute means to me. =>

  14. I think that this quote means that the person who does their absolute best should be seen as an achiever but may not seem like it to us but they give it their all and they see themselves as a winner.

  16. I think it means that to get far in whatever you do you have to do your best my dad told me to never do a half job in the kitchen because if you do it right the first time you won't have to do again.
